<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
Dear all,</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
Already a year since we last updated our blog...time flies!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
It has been a busy year, discovering several parts of Colombia and enjoying its diversity...learning Spanish and getting to know Colombians...settling in our Colombian way of life and both working...and of course, since already 7 months, expecting our baby girl for beginning of November!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
To give you an overview of Colombia and share with you our trips in this beautiful country, we have posted below links to our pictures (just click on the name of the destination). You can also locate on the map where each place is. Comments and stories on our trip are next to the pictures in the right column. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
Hopefully this will make you want to come and discover Colombia!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
In the next post, we publish some pictures of our life in Bogota. For the moment, enjoy these beautiful landscapes!!!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
Bonjour à tous,</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">

Bogota, 2600m high, 8 million inhabitants, next to the equator but with a constant yearly temperature of 20 degree, is now our new home!<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">

Like most people, when we first heard that we were going to Colombia the only ideas & images which came up to our mind were narco-trafficking, guerrillas, coffee and... yes, Shakira. Luckily, we had a few friends and family members who had been in Colombia or who knew Colombians and therefore could shed a new light on Colombia, a more joyful and welcoming one. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
We had a first introduction trip in March during which we found our apartment and then moved to Bogota in May 2013. Since then, it has been an intensive 3-months of Spanish learning (course at the university for Charlotte, private lessons for Andries and intensive working day in Spanish only), getting accustomed to the altitude (especially for Charlotte who had some issue with it and ended up at the hospital! Luckily, nothing serious, just strong headaches and memory losses), meeting with the international community and luckily, thanks to our contacts, meeting with Colombians.<br />
<br />
We already had the chance to discover some parts of the country: Cartagena on the Caribbean Coast, Villa de Leyva (a really cute colonial town in the region of Boyaca, 3hrs from Bogota) and thanks to our very good contact in the Govaert family, Bart, we were invited to their family "finca" (countryside home, farm) in the stunning "zona cafetera" or coffee region. His family in law produces coffee and we had the opportunity to see part of their fields and to be explained the coffee production process.<br />

So far, our experience in Colombia has been an enjoyable surprise! Maybe is it because of the harsh and violent image that Colombia has from abroad but we discover a country whose security situation improved a lot in the last 5-7 years (it is now possible to travel by car in most of the country), whose economy is one of the most dynamic in South America and which has a lot to offer to tourists. A lot of amazing natural parks, the Amazon region, the Pacific Coast, cities like Medellin (which, surprisingly is supposed to be the most developed and dynamic city of the country), Cali (capital of salsa), islands in the Caribbean, etc. Still, our nicest "discovery" has been the Colombians! Very nice, welcoming and helpful people who do make us like their country even more!<br />
<br />
In the link below, some pictures from the old city of Bogota, La Candelaria, (we still have to take pictures from our neighbourhood) & Cartagena. Click on <a href="http://flickr.com/gp/97614172@N06/57944U/" target="_blank">Album Bogota- Cartagena</a><br />

<br />
<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>

Both families got some time to get to know each other, share stories about the future-wed and appreciate the "summery" weather (not) of the Dutch summer.</span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: rgb(51, 51, 51); font-family: Arial, sans-serif; ">
<br /></span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" ></span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: rgb(51, 51, 51); font-family: Arial, sans-serif; ">July 14th was our civil wedding in Leiden with our direct family and bride personnel. We met for coffee at the Grote Beer and then "had to go" by boat to the city hall. The idea of having a boat tour on the canals was originally to a nice and pleasant way to show the city to the French guests....when we planned it, we had in mind that it would be summer time, meaning a bit of sun, a bit of cloud, at worst, a bit chilly. But the weather had decided differently, it would be a theme day: The Flood! Horizontal rain for 24hours. In France, we say: "rainy wedding, happy marriage", ours has a very promising future!!!</span></div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: rgb(51, 51, 51); font-family: Arial, sans-serif; "></span><div><div style="text-align: center;"><span class="Apple-style-span" >

Luckily, the comments of uncle Hein and some surprise "appearances" from Minerva students along the way entertained us until the city hall.</span><span class="Apple-style-span" ><p class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: arial; margin-bottom: 0.0001pt; line-height: normal; "><span lang="EN-US" style="font-size:12.0pt;font-family:"Times New Roman","serif"; mso-fareast-font-family:"Times New Roman";mso-ansi-language:EN-US;mso-fareast-language: FR"><o:p> </o:p></span></p></span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: rgb(51, 51, 51); font-family: Arial, sans-serif; ">The civil ceremony was presided by uncle Wilbert, especially appointed "civil magistrate" for the event. He made a very nice speech in French and English (jokes included!) and declared us legally married. After the ceremony, Andries' bride personnel and his uncle Hein had organized a champagne toast and a wedding cake in the city hall, it was extremely nice.</span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: rgb(51, 51, 51); font-family: Arial, sans-serif; "><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: rgb(0, 0, 0); font-family: Georgia, serif; "><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: rgb(51, 51, 51); font-family: Arial, sans-serif; "></span></span></span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: rgb(51, 51, 51); font-family: Arial, sans-serif; ">We then "had to" go back on the boat to go to Allemansgeest. Once again, we had chosen the place for its location, a terrace at the water front, thinking it would be summer....Luckily, the restaurant was also equipped for autumn weather and had a very nice fireplace which everybody appreciated to warm up. It actually gave a very cozy atmosphere to the dinner party. The evening was full of surprise (photo decoration by the bride personnel), funny speeches and caring gifts.</span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: rgb(51, 51, 51); font-family: Arial, sans-serif; ">

<br />
<br />
Dogsledding in Transylvania! with our Italian/Romanian friends Sorin and Chiara we went a weekend to the Mountains of Hargitha in the middle of Romania. Friday night we had a stop over in our "regular" B&B in Brasjov and on Saturday morning we drove to Batan in the Carpatian mountains. During the drive into the mountains we spotted wild deers and foxes, pretty amazing view on the beautiful country site in Romania! The lady with her dogs was waiting for us when we arrived.</p><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 400px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 226px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5575400265239869682" border="0" alt="" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-1mojDL3f5jU/TV_NAGI9uPI/AAAAAAAAA58/hyRQBeqzr4c/s400/Dogsledding%2B5.JPG" />Apparently she and her husband are competing in Extreme Sports competitions around central Europe and the dogs need to be trained for that. If tourists are coming over and want to pay to sit on the sledge during a 2 hrs ride, they are more than happy! Our friends did only a small tour as Chiara was pregnant and didnt want to be shaken to much. Charlotte and myself went for the 2 hours into the mountains and it was great! Remembering the colg long winter of last year, Andries bought to tickets for a weekend break to the Sun. And we were lucky......:-) Arriving on Friday evening, the weather for the weekend was great. We booked a hotel with Acropolis view and after some insistence we also got a room with the view on the Parthenon. Saturday we spend scrolling around in the old part of Athens. Very nice and relaxed, especially because we were lucky with the weather and in the low season without the overkill on tourists. After the old town we visited the Acropolis, Ancient Agoda, National gardens etc etc in the afternoon and on Sunday. Especially the new Acropolis museum was impressive (it took apparently 40 years to finish). On Sunday evening we flew back with enough sunshine on our faces to cope with the winter back in Romania! However, we had had some good feedbacks from people living in Bucharest so we were all the more curious to discover the city and made up our own opinion. </div><div style="text-align: justify;">We discovered a city with an interesting mix of architectural style, from sovietic style building (Palace of Parliament) built during the communist era under Ceausescu to 19th-20th centuries palaces, churches and villas which gave to Bucharest the nickname of "Little Paris" and new modern construction. The city is also quite green with numerous parks and gardens, which we very much appreciate after China. The city is of course not perfect with its horrendous traffic, damaged streets and villas and numerous stray dogs. However, its feels like a city with a lot of potential.</div><div style="text-align: justify;">Although Romania is surrounded by Slavic nations, Romanians appeared to be much closer to Latin people, in their language and behaviour; they remind us a bit to Italians ;-) They like big cars, coffee and terrasse, and are proud and emotional people. We were surprised how good they are in languages, in English of course, but also in French. </div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">Lately, Andries started working and travelling in the country to visit the different factories, Charlotte got in contact with the French community and few Dutch, will start Romanian lessons next week and is looking for a job. We found an apartment but will only move there in mid-November when we'll received our furniture from China and when the apartment will, hopefully, be finished! </div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">You can see some pictures some Bucharest by clicking on the link. </div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">A bientot,</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">Charlotte & Andries</div>Charlotte and Andrieshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13393946393434461312noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6421373051116947868.post-68320606905877773652009-11-01T06:09:00.000-05:002009-11-01T09:10:03.416-05:00再见中国 - Bye bye China<div style="text-align: justify;">Dear all,</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">After our trip back in Europe this summer, Andries was offered by his company to go working in Romania, Bucharest. We then decided to enjoy as much as possible the time left in China by visiting Tibet (following post) and taking the time to say "good bye" to our friends and colleagues. </div><div style="text-align: justify;">We really enjoyed our time in this huge and surprising country as well as the all great people we met along this experience. We are definitely curious to hear from our friends still in China about the latest news in Shanghai and we look forward coming back one day to see all the changes. After a flight to Xining, Qinghai Province, we took a 24hours train in direction of Lhasa, also known as the highest train in the world!</div><div style="text-align: justify;">Arrived in the Tibetan capital, we spent 3 days visiting monasteries, strolling in the charming streets of the old town of Lhasa, observing the devotion of Tibetans pilgrims and getting used to the altitude (3500m) and to the (un)famous yak-butter tea.</div><div style="text-align: justify;">We then went for a 3 days tour in the Himalayas reaching our highest point at 5000m! We visited the cities of Gyantse and Shigatse (2nd biggest city in Tibet and also the seat of the Panchen Lama) and discovered the amazing Tibetan landscape: glaciers, turquoise lakes and its endless mountain scenery. </div><div style="text-align: justify;">Tibet was definitely a unique trip and experience, especially after living in China for 3 years, following the events of this region and hearing the Chinese's point of view. It appeared to us more as a foreign country than another region of China with its own culture, language, customs and beliefs...definitely another world than China. We recommend you visiting it before it becomes to 'chinese'.</div><div style="text-align: justify;">For more details on our trip, click on the link "Tibet". <br />
<br />
<br />Hi everybody,
<br />
<br />We are finally back and need to catch up with the last 6 months...Actually, a lot happened these last 6 months: we visited India, Cambodia and bit more China. But let's start with India!
<br />We had already been in India a few years ago to visit our friends Val & Pieter and to explore the region of Kerala (South-West). This year, we decided to go back to India to visit other friends, Perrine & Baptiste, and explore a new region of India, Tamil Nadu (South-East). This is such a huge country with so many different areas, landscapes, monuments and atmosphere to discover. Each trip (yes, it is now the third time in India) seems like a new one!
<br />We started our trip in New Delhi. However, we arrived just before India National Day (Republic Day) on January 26th, therefore most of the main attractions, such as the Red Fort, were closed...Hopefully, we found some other places to visit which were just as much interesting and impressive. We then flew to Madras (Chennai) and drove directly to Mamallapuram to meet Perrine and her friends. Mamallapuram is a small pleasant town by the sea which is know for its shore temples and stone carving. The area is listed at the World Heritage. We of course visited the temples as well as enjoy some times at the beach :-) We have to say, it was not the cleanest beach ever but coming from cold winter Shanghai, we didn't really care and even enjoy sharing the beach with the cows. During our stay at Mamallapuram was a big dance festival showcasing dances from all over India.
<br />We continued our trip to Pondicherry, former french enclave in the 18th century. Some pockets areas of the city retain french colonial villas, school, restaurants, etc. It is actually a very quiet and pleasant area when which we enjoyed when we wanted to escape from buzzing streets. The owner of our guesthouse in Pondicherry recommended us to continue our trip to Chettinad. The area is not mentioned in the travel guides but it is really worth it and we do also recommend it! Chettinad is an area where wealthy Tamils used to live in the 19th-20th century and where they built a lot of luxurious mansions. The area has now been abandoned but you can still visit the villas and buy some of the remaining furniture or decoration items at the local market.
<br />On the way to Chettinad, we stopped by Tanjore to visit its World Heritage Temple and we then ended our trip in noisy Madurai. "Noisy"? It shouldn't be too surprising for an Indian city except that during our stay at Madurai, it was the local governor's birthday and for everybody to celebrate it, there were speakers all over the city playing loud music all day long for 3-4 days...as well as human-sized pictures of him at every corner! Memorable!!

<br />
<br />Bonjour tout le monde,
<br />
<br />Nous avons atterris en Inde a New Delhi.

We indeed neglected our blog for a couple of months and...there is no real excuse for that...just lazy us! So here are the "last" updates since September 2008! It all started with our one year celebration of living in Shanghai. We still enjoy it a lot and wish to stay as long as we can. Andries still fly a lot up-and-down to Guangzhou, plays hockey on Saturday night and still try to convince Charlotte to come seeing him playing. Charlotte still works on CSR projects for SHV, started learning golf (and is enjoying it) and still promise Andries that she will come one day seeing him playing hockey...when the weather will be nice! The big news are Andries & Charlotte are now taking french and dutch lesson with Belgium teachers (serious!!!) and succeeded in finding a group of "Frutch" (french-dutch couple) in Shanghai.<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_I6DFhyiq50c/SeQDbdamjmI/AAAAAAAAAWM/-MdyoqsMGpo/s1600-h/CIMG7563.JPG"><img style="margin: 0pt 0pt 10px 10px; float: right; cursor: pointer; width: 150px; height: 200px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_I6DFhyiq50c/SeQDbdamjmI/AAAAAAAAAWM/-MdyoqsMGpo/s200/CIMG7563.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5324384429746327138" border="0" /></a><br /><br />During these past 8 months, we had some visitors (family and friends) and kept exploring China and South-East Asia! Mid-September was the the Moon festival in China, as well as in Vietnam, also we took the opportunity of this long week end to visit Hanoi. In October, Charlotte's parents, Armel & Graziella, came over for 3 weeks. We went together to the South-West province of Guangxi (Longsheng and Yangshuo) to visit the famous rice terraces and limestone peaks.<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_I6DFhyiq50c/SeQENBonZRI/AAAAAAAAAWU/OH-A6Mopybc/s1600-h/CIMG8022-1.JPG"><img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer; width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_I6DFhyiq50c/SeQENBonZRI/AAAAAAAAAWU/OH-A6Mopybc/s200/CIMG8022-1.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5324385281282368786" border="0" /></a>We then went to Hong Kong and from there flied to Taiwan, Taipei. Almost 10 years ago, as part of a student exchange program, the family Roche had received a Taiwanese girl in their family, Lucy. We had since then kept contact with her and the trip of Armel & Graziella was the opportunity for the family Roche to pay a visit to Lucy and her family. We were warmly welcomed by the Hsieh family, visited Taipei and the surrounding and attending a wedding with them (quite an experience1!). <a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_I6DFhyiq50c/SeQFDiI0SaI/AAAAAAAAAWc/pOYTc5ZiLyU/s1600-h/CIMG7856-1.JPG"><img style="margin: 0pt 0pt 10px 10px; float: right; cursor: pointer; width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_I6DFhyiq50c/SeQFDiI0SaI/AAAAAAAAAWc/pOYTc5ZiLyU/s200/CIMG7856-1.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5324386217720301986" border="0" /></a>Afterwards, Armel & Graziella went to Beijing and ended their trip in Shanghai! After so much traveling and visits, Andries & Charlotte decided to take a relaxing holidays to the Philippines, on the secluded island of Palawan!<br /><br />Have a look at the pictures by clicking on the link (right column)<br /><br />The rest of the update will come soon. The 08/08/2008, we were there, in Beijing, for the opening ceremony! Strong security measures on this day as the last flight to go to Beijing was at 2pm. After that, no plane was allowed to fligh over Beijing. When we arrive in the city, strange feeling...the highway between the airport and the center is empty, the city is very quiet and the security guards everywhere. It doesn't really feel like a world event is going to happen.<br />But still, people are ready! Volunteers, tourist, sports fan and athletes are everywhere to watch the opening ceremony.<br /><br />When we came back to Beijing after our trip in Mongolia (at the end of the Olympics), the atmosphere was more relax and lively. We spent for 4 days, saw 3 hockeys games, 3 athlectics games and spend 2 nights at the Heineken House! The overall feeling was much better than at the opening day: games were quite well organised, the beijing population was very proud and always willing to help their new foreign friends and the weather was great! Such a blue sky has not been seen for years in Beijing, apparently some beijingneses have now published a petition on the net to maintain the environmental measures taken during the Olympics! We'll see...<br /><br />By now, have a look at the pictures, click on the slideshow on the left!<br /><br /> ****************************************************************************<br /><br />Le 08/08/2008, nous étions a Beijing, le jour de la cérémonie d'ouverture des JO!Les mesures de sécurités étaient strictes. We flew via Beijing (we were there at the 8-8-8!) to Ulaanbataar (UB). Mongolia is roughly the size of France, Germany and England together with 2,5 million people living there (lowest density in the world). Around 1 million live in the capital (UB) and the other live in Gers (Nomad tents) in the rest of the country. The capital is not so interesting, as buildings are mainly from the communist period and not very beautiful. In recent years a lot of natural resources were found in Mongolia and you see a lot of new buildings being build (mainly by Chinese contractors) financed by the new money coming in.<br /><br />After one day in UB we packed up and went in our car (with driver and guide) on our tour. Our ambition was to reach the lake in the North West (Khovsgol Nuur) but it became very soon clear that with an average speed of 25km per hour we would need more time than the 12 days we had and we opted for a route closer by, which turned out to be very beautiful as well.<br />The first day, we stopped with a nomad family close to sand dunes (little bit like the Drunese Duinen in Holland), which stretches for 150 km or so in the middle of Mongolia. It was our first discovery of the hospitality of the Mongol people and their way of living (2 tents, 20 horses, 150 goats and sheep, 2 dogs, 2 camels, no toilet or running water etc.). They appeared to us like much more european than the rest of asia, in their way of thinking, behaving, eating, dressing, probably because of the strong russian influence. The nomads live in the steppe all year and usually move place every seasons.Their children are going to boarding school in the winter and in the summer stay with the families in the gers and help with herding the animals. The gers are quite simple from the out and inside, but always very nicely decorated inside. Most of the time the families had two gers during this "tourist" season: one to live and cook in and one to sleep in (or to put the visitors in when they arrive).<br /><br />We were there at "high" tourist season, which meant that the temperatures and weather were very nice (28 degree Celsius) but at night the temperature lowered down till around 8 degree which was pretty cold (and we didnt anticipated). In the winter some of the places we visited would have temperatures of -50 degree Celsius, so not the season for Charlotte to come back.<br /><br />Our trip included visit to the ancient capital of Mongolia (Kharakorum) and its first Buddhist monastery, Erdene. Buddhism is very wide spread (other religions like Islam and Christianity are also there) and have a close link with the Buddhism in Tibet. As Mongolia is mainly known for its outstanding nature, we spent most of the trip visiting waterfalls, volcanos, lakes, gorges, steppe, steppe and steppe. On this point, we can say that the Mongolian Ministry of Tourism doesn't trick the tourists, the nature is truly unspoilted and it feels like the country hasn't change for centuries. The fact that the roads are so bad and it takes a lot of time to travel preserve the country from the invasion of tourists. It also still give a chance to stay with the nomad families, which is as well an highlight of the trip.<br /><br />By choosing to spend our holidays in Mongolia, we were looking for a change of scene from China: few people (lowest density in the world, more animals than people), nature (steppes as far as the eye can see) and fresh air!!! We definitely were not disappointed!<br /><br />As it was mainly a nature and beautiful sceneries trip, we can better show the pictures as they speak for themselves (click on the slideshow on the right).<br /><br /><br /> ************************************************<br /><br />Nous voila de retour de la terre de Genkhis Khan et de ses descendants!<br />Petite presentation: La Mongolie a approximativement la taille de la France, Angleterre et Allemagne reunis mais ne compte que 2,5 milion d'habitants, soit la plus basse densite au monde. Nous avons definitivement trouve tout ca!!!!<br /><br />Je vous laisse apprecier les photos (cliquer sur le diaporama a droite)<br /></div>Charlotte and Andrieshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13393946393434461312noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6421373051116947868.post-77548456692347742502008-08-04T07:01:00.001-05:002008-08-04T07:01:36.049-05:00Seoul!<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://bp3.blogger.com/_I6DFhyiq50c/SE0dnqnWdzI/AAAAAAAAAJ4/DcCk3GD-UEs/s1600-h/CIMG6113.JPG"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer;" src="http://bp3.blogger.com/_I6DFhyiq50c/SE0dnqnWdzI/AAAAAAAAAJ4/DcCk3GD-UEs/s320/CIMG6113.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5209852911228974898" border="0" /></a><br /><div style="text-align: justify;">Together with our friends Robert and Suzanne, we visited Seoul & the DMZ (Demilitarised Zone) for 3 days. We spent our first day visiting some of main royal palaces of Seoul (Gyeongbokgung,16th century), the largest buddhist shrine of Seoul (Jogyesa) and strolled around the Insadong area. This district of Seoul is one of the few which retain an atmosphere of the past. Following the advise of our Lonely Planet, we went for diner to a restaurant owned by ex-monk Kim Yun-sik to eat genuine vegetarian Buddhist temple food! The atmosphere was indeed quite nice but not so "genuine,"we kind of felt like in a tourist trick!<br /><br />Next day, we went for a all-day tour to the DMZ, the border with North Korea. This one is located 55km away from Seoul and one of the big attraction for tourists! Quite amazing when you think that the all purpose of the trip is just to go as close as you can to the border to catch a glimpse of North Korea! Crazy also to imagine the money and the energy spent to keep this border where it is! Andries finally made it officially to the North (one step)......<br />The 4 KM wide and 250 KM long buffer zone is really a no-man's land full with mines, soldiers etc. Like the Berlin wall, a requiem of the cold war! Before arriving at the border, we visited the "3rd tunnel" which was dug by North Korea to invade the South in the 1970s. When South Korea discovered the tunnels, North korean quickly smeared coals on the walls and claimed it was a coal mine!!!<br />Very impressive and also sad was to read the history of these two countries, which in fact till nowadays is one Nation splited into two.<br />We didn't mingle in with the Koreans too much, but in restaurants we went, they (other guests, so not the waiters!) were very helpfull to explain us things.<br /><br />Last day was spent visiting more palaces (Deoksugung, Gyeonghuigung) and walking through new areas: Gangnam, the modern business district, and Insadong and its traditional <span style="font-style: italic;">yangban</span> aristocrate houses (traditional but not old, meaning new traditional aristocrat houses!) before we headed back to Shanghai!<br /><br />Seoul came across as a very quiet and relaxed city (especially when you come from Shanghai), a bridge between China and Japan with its own culture and traditions!<br />For pictures, see the link on the right.<br /><br /><div style="text-align: center;"> *******************************************************<br /><br /><div style="text-align: justify;">En mars dernier, cherchant à faire une escapade de Shanghai (et de Chine) pendant quelques jours, nous sommes partis avec nos amis Suzanne & Robert pour un week-end de trois jours Séoul (2h d'avion de Shanghai).<br />Arrivés au pays du matin calme, l'atmosphère nous a en effet tout de suite apparu plus reposante et détendue qu'à Shanghai. Of course not, they told me... I would almost say that the pictures prove otherwise, but I can't argue with my parents of course.<br /><br />China!<br /><br />We came to Xi'an (ancient capital of China located in the middle of the country) where we met in the morning for breakfeast in the Hotel (Pap & Mam arrived with the night train from Beijing). We visited together the City wall and went on to the Terracotta Army, in the eveving some Chinese show and dance. The army was quite impressive indeed (also for us the first time) to see the wealth and grandeur being put and burried together for the Kings. The next day we strolled through the old town and the Muslim area.<br />In the afternoon, we left by train to Luoyang to visit the longmen Caves (100,000 Buddha statues). Althought Luoyang served as captial a 2000 years ago (of the east Kingdom), appart from the Buddha statues in the caves, nothing is left.<br />We left the same evening for Shanghai where Pap & Mam spent a few days buying Dong-Xi (stuff), especially from the fake-antics market and visiting the nice places in this town.<br />On Wednesday, we went together with Suzanne and her Parents to Suzhou to visit a Silk factory and the famous rock gardens (UNESCO heritage). Also wining and dining was done frequently in the nice (western and Chinese) places that Shanghai has to offer. The last days were mostly spend visiting the highlights of Shanghai (including a filling plant) which concluded to be very different from Dussen. Click on the slideshow on the right to see the pictures.<br /><br /><div style="text-align: center;"> ***********************************************************************<br /><div style="text-align: left;">Quand les parents d'Andries (Piet & Teuneke) sont arrivés en Chine, nous leur avons demandés s'ils souffraient du décalage horaire, s'ils étaient "jetlag"! He is one of the thousands wandering cats which, in some cases, end up in the soup or are killed for their fur! (and than sold as real tiger fur to Amercian tourists). Mao is approximately 9 weeks old and his name also means "cat" in chinese, although the tonation is different than with the Great leader!<br /><br /> ******************************************<br /><br />Mao est de Shanghai et a ete trouve dans la rue. Although the Chinese government still block all access to blogspot- blogs and our earlier way via anonymouse didnt work either, we found a new way to access the blog.<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://bp1.blogger.com/_I6DFhyiq50c/RzcOPWNfuUI/AAAAAAAAAFY/3hu2q6US8pE/s1600-h/CIMG0749.JPG"><img style="margin: 0pt 0pt 10px 10px; float: right; cursor: pointer;" src="http://bp1.blogger.com/_I6DFhyiq50c/RzcOPWNfuUI/AAAAAAAAAFY/3hu2q6US8pE/s200/CIMG0749.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5131585957234981186" border="0" /></a><br /><br />In our last post of 12th of August we announced that we would move to Shanghai. After our last weeks in Guangzhou (Andries got finally some real visitors to GZ) we went to France and later to Holland on holidays.<br />Although Dussen is very nice, we went up to the Norht to the pretty island of Schiemonnikoog. Compared with the polluted air in Guangzhou and Shanghai, it was very nice to get an oversuply of fresh oxygen which we could use to bring back to China.<br /><br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://bp0.blogger.com/_I6DFhyiq50c/RzcRLGNfuXI/AAAAAAAAAFw/qvUN4bMC7oI/s1600-h/CIMG0774.JPG"><img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer;" src="http://bp0.blogger.com/_I6DFhyiq50c/RzcRLGNfuXI/AAAAAAAAAFw/qvUN4bMC7oI/s200/CIMG0774.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5131589182755420530" border="0" /></a><br /><br /><br />Coming back from Schiemonnikoog to Dussen we stopped over in Giethoorn, so Charlotte now nows everything about Holland!<br /><br /><br /><br />Then early September we went to China (Andries had to be in Guangzhou) so Charlotte received the movers and unpacked most of our stuff in our new house. The appartment is very convienently located in the center of Shanghai and we are still learning about China and the Shanghainese customs / traditions every day. Things like: walking in the evening in a small park in your pyama's before you go to sleep is very common, the same counts to lite fireworks for evey occasion (marriage, birthday, opening of a new store, full moon, cat pregnant, etc etc) so every day we see some fireworks in the old part of town. (as we are writing now, we can hardly hear each other, becasue of the noise of the fireworks). But firther more Shanghai is a very interesting and nice city. Really a mix of old Chinese tradition, western (high style) influence and all in all you can see that this city is booming, so nice period to live here now.<br /><br />Luckely we met some people quickly and we rolled into the social network of Shanghai quite easily, so for the social part an improvedment compared with Guangzhou!<br /><br />During last October Holidays we hopped over to neigbouring Japan.<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://bp1.blogger.com/_I6DFhyiq50c/RzcQTWNfuWI/AAAAAAAAAFo/ljHUGeq7kTg/s1600-h/CIMG1139.JPG"><img style="margin: 0pt 0pt 10px 10px; float: right; cursor: pointer;" src="http://bp1.blogger.com/_I6DFhyiq50c/RzcQTWNfuWI/AAAAAAAAAFo/ljHUGeq7kTg/s200/CIMG1139.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5131588224977713506" border="0" /></a> In 8 days we visit 4 (ancient) capitals of this country. First started in Edo (Tokyo) than Kamakura and Kyoto and we finished in Narra. After visiting quite a few Asian countries last year, we were both surpised (although we knew) about finding such a sophisticated, quiet, western and "old" country in the middle of this continent. Japan in development is certainly 3 generations ahead of China, and it was really nice to travel here. Especially Kyoto which its green hills, parks and thousand temples was really impressive. See on the left the link of the photographs....<br /><br />This weekend we celebrated Andries 33th birthday with a "surpirse" diner in an Indonesian restaurant and going clubbing in the Paramount. We first read about the Paramount as a restored art-deco 1920s building which apparantly still had its old grandeur. However we also read after it that recent refurbishment didnt have left a lot of this and now some of the floors had turned into a huge Chinese style night club. Anyway, information enough to check it ourselves and unfortunately indeed, we landed in this 1990s style of hard music, techno style night club, but we had a good night out!.<br /><br />See on the right our pictures, hopefully we will update you a little bit more frequent now we found a new way to access our blog.<br /><br />Greetings!<br />Charlotte & AndriesCharlotte and Andrieshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13393946393434461312noreply@blogger.com0
