Bogota, 2600m high, 8 million inhabitants, next to the equator but with a constant yearly temperature of 20 degree, is now our new home!
Like most people, when we first heard that we were going to Colombia the only ideas & images which came up to our mind were narco-trafficking, guerrillas, coffee and... yes, Shakira. Luckily, we had a few friends and family members who had been in Colombia or who knew Colombians and therefore could shed a new light on Colombia, a more joyful and welcoming one.
We had a first introduction trip in March during which we found our apartment and then moved to Bogota in May 2013. Since then, it has been an intensive 3-months of Spanish learning (course at the university for Charlotte, private lessons for Andries and intensive working day in Spanish only), getting accustomed to the altitude (especially for Charlotte who had some issue with it and ended up at the hospital! Luckily, nothing serious, just strong headaches and memory losses), meeting with the international community and luckily, thanks to our contacts, meeting with Colombians.
We already had the chance to discover some parts of the country: Cartagena on the Caribbean Coast, Villa de Leyva (a really cute colonial town in the region of Boyaca, 3hrs from Bogota) and thanks to our very good contact in the Govaert family, Bart, we were invited to their family "finca" (countryside home, farm) in the stunning "zona cafetera" or coffee region. His family in law produces coffee and we had the opportunity to see part of their fields and to be explained the coffee production process.
So far, our experience in Colombia has been an enjoyable surprise! Maybe is it because of the harsh and violent image that Colombia has from abroad but we discover a country whose security situation improved a lot in the last 5-7 years (it is now possible to travel by car in most of the country), whose economy is one of the most dynamic in South America and which has a lot to offer to tourists. A lot of amazing natural parks, the Amazon region, the Pacific Coast, cities like Medellin (which, surprisingly is supposed to be the most developed and dynamic city of the country), Cali (capital of salsa), islands in the Caribbean, etc. Still, our nicest "discovery" has been the Colombians! Very nice, welcoming and helpful people who do make us like their country even more!

Comme la plupart des gens, quand on nous a proposé de partir en Colombie, les seules images qui nous sont venus à l'esprit étaient le narcotrafic, la guérilla, le café et ... oui, Shakira. Heureusement, nous avions quelques amis et membres de la famille qui avaient déjà été en Colombie ou qui connaissaient des Colombiens et pouvaient donc nous apporter un nouveau éclairage sur la Colombie, un plus joyeux et accueillant.
Nous avons eu un premier voyage d'introduction en mars au cours de duquel nous avons trouvé notre appartement, puis nous avons déménagé en Bogota en mai 2013. Depuis, ces 3 premiers mois furent intensifs en apprentissage de l'espagnol (cours à l'université pour Charlotte, cours particuliers pour Andries et journée de travail en espagnol seulement), s'accoutumer à l'altitude (en particulier pour Charlotte qui a eu quelques problèmes au début et a même fini à l'hôpital! Heureusement, rien de grave, juste des maux de tête et pertes de mémoire), et rencontre avec la communauté internationale de Bogota, et heureusement, grâce à nos contacts, rencontre avec des Colombiens.
Nous avons déjà eu l'occasion de découvrir certaines parties du pays: Carthagène sur la côte Caraïbe, Villa de Leyva (une ville coloniale charmante dans la région de Boyaca, 3h de Bogota) et grâce à notre très bon contact dans la famille Govaert, Bart, nous avons eu la chance d'être invités dans la "finca" familiale (maison de campagne ou ferme) dans la magnifique région cafetière, la "zona cafetera". Sa belle-famille produit du café et nous avons eu l'occasion de voir une partie de leurs champs et qu'on nous explique le processus de production du café.
Jusqu'à présent, notre expérience en Colombie a été une agréable surprise! Peut-être est-ce à cause de l'image dure et violente que la Colombie a à l'étranger, mais nous avons découvert un pays dont la situation sécuritaire s'est beaucoup améliorée au cours des 5-7 dernières années (il est désormais possible de voyager en voiture dans la plupart du pays), dont l'économie est l'une des plus dynamiques d'Amérique du Sud et qui a beaucoup à offrir aux touristes. Un grand nombre de superbes parcs naturels, la région de l'Amazonie, la côte Pacifique, des villes comme Medellin (qui, étonnamment, est décrite comme la ville la plus développée et la plus dynamique du pays), Cali (capitale de la salsa), des îles dans les Caraïbes, etc . Pourtant, notre plus belle «découverte» a été les Colombiens! Des gens très agréables, joyeux, accueillants et serviables qui nous font aimer encore plus leur pays!

Apparently she and her husband are competing in Extreme Sports competitions around central Europe and the dogs need to be trained for that. If tourists are coming over and want to pay to sit on the sledge during a 2 hrs ride, they are more than happy! Our friends did only a small tour as Chiara was pregnant and didnt want to be shaken to much. Charlotte and myself went for the 2 hours into the mountains and it was great!
